Contemporary Gilding with Instacoll: A One-Day Practical Course
Kintsugi — meaning “golden joinery” — began in Japan over 500 years ago. Rather than concealing cracks or disguising damage, this beautiful tradition honours
repair. A broken clay, porcelain, or glass object is restored in a way that celebrates its history, revealing the fracture as part of its life story.
At a time when we are becoming increasingly conscious of sustainability and care for the world around us, this philosophy feels especially relevant. Kintsugi
invites us to value restoration over replacement and to find beauty in resilience. It is particularly meaningful for those who create pottery and clay pieces,
where there are no longer “failed” or broken kiln firings — only opportunities for exploration and transformation.
In this workshop, you will explore contemporary Kintsugi techniques using your own broken items. You are welcome to bring a cracked, chipped, or shattered
vessels to repair — or, if you prefer, you may intentionally break a piece during the class to experience the full transformation.
Cracks, gaps, and chips are repaired and highlighted with genuine gold leaf, turning what was once considered a flaw into a luminous design feature. Vases,
plates, bowls, and other ceramic or glass objects can all be explored.
We will work with modern, water-based materials alongside specialist adhesives. Repairs may be finished in either pure yellow gold or a softer champagne gold,
according to your preference. All materials are provided, though you are encouraged to bring your own broken piece if you wish.
Once you have experienced the techniques, you will be encouraged to experiment further within your own creative practice. Kintsugi is not limited to pottery
— consider how wood, stone, glass, or even metal might respond to these ideas. Break rules as well as objects!

You’ll learn how to handle leaf correctly, prepare surfaces, and explore the basics of oil, water and glass gilding — or even a taste of all three. Whether you’re amateur, professional or simply keen to learn a new skill, this course offers a fun, stimulating experience rooted in a craft whose history reaches back millennia.

1 Day Intro to Instacoll
This one-day practical course introduces participants to the
creative potential of Instacoll gilding mediums through any of the decorative and applied art fields.
With several hands on demos
and exercises, you will explore a range of Instacoll products. Suitable for those with
no previous gilding experience as well as offering refinements for those
who use any other traditional gilding methods.
1 Day Gilding for Artists
This 1 day class is designed for artists wishing to incorporate gilding into their work. You'll explore how copper, silver and gold can enhance papers, canvases, paintings, sculpture and enhance other creative disciplines. The course covers applying leaf to different surfaces, looking at patination and other special effects such as verdigris and applied colour work, painting delicate fine lines.

The Personal Class is ideal for those who prefer a private class with me here, or at your home / studio for an advanced learning experience. Arranged at your request, each session is tailored to your interests, skill level, and creative goals, ensuring focused tuition and development. All tools and materials can be brought to you, making the experience convenient and fully equipped. Sessions can be arranged for one-to-one tuition or shared with one or two others to help divide the cost.
