Gilding Classes

I  provide a wide range of classes or personal tuition for those who wish to experience gilding in a variety of formats and locations.  It doesn’t matter what your experience or background, the courses can also be tailored to fully suit your personal needs. I have worked with many different disciplines of artists, frame-makers, furniture restorers, interior designers, photographers and many more.  I also specialise in developing the skills and confidence of complete beginnners, so you’ll be in good hands, don’t worry!

I’m able to teach either in my own studio situated on the South of England or I can  travel to you, no matter where you are - whether that’s the U.K., U.S., Australasia or Timbuktu, it’s not a problem.

For professional bodies, colleges and organisations, I  offer my services for much larger classes, tailored to suit your needs. Great for wood-working groups, interior designers, artists and more whom wish to add something special to their work.  Again, distance is not a problem.Chippendaleth

All the courses are fully tailored to the individual needs of the student, but I also have 2 set formats for those whom are just interested in general gilding or are unsure how to proceed:

The 2 Day Taster is a great way to be introduced to basic gilding and the correct techniques of handling the gold, surface preparation and more.  It covers the basics of oil gilding and water gilding.

The 5 Day Masterclass provides a much deeper level of understanding of gilding. As well as covering the techniques of the 2-day taster, on this course, students are encouraged to bring a piece of work that they wish to work on and are provided tailored guidance on how to proceed.

The Personal Class is for those who prefer a more home based personal experience, I make myself available to you at your request.  Again, these classes are tailored to your specifications and ensure undivided personal attention and development.  This can be for more than one person too, so you can share costs with a friend or two!

Thank you for a hugely enjoyable, informative and stimulating two days. Your tuition far exceeded my expectations and I left with skills beyond those I had anticipated. Furthermore, I really appreciated the way you were able to tailor your knowledge to my particular situation and interests, making the course wonderfully applicable to me. You removed the mists that seem to surround gilding, allowing me to learn in a supportive environment. I find a great test of any course is ones mind-set once it is over. So many times one is left feeling “I can’t”, but with your tuition, Richard, I very much left feeling that “I can”. I’d recommend your courses in a heartbeat!’  Clive Bryant – Artist -

‘Hi Richard just a line to thank you for a well-constructed and informal class.  I now feel confident enough to attempt most projects.  Regards’- Tony B.

‘Great Course, very educational.’ - John.

‘Loved the workshop, the instructor was a nice chap who had time for everyone. He made it a fun experience and at the same time was able to show us different processes and techniques.’ - Mel.

‘Hi Richard, really enjoyed the course recently. I missed out on an old set of burnishers on eBay last week. 48 items went for £90... they would have been a really good buy!’- Rick K.

Dear Richard, I have been meaning to write for some time to say how much I enjoyed your couple of weeks teaching at Gifford. I know that everyone else enjoyed it as much as I did.’ - Charlie C.
